Our Team

Random Acts is a non-profit that operates with very little overhead. All of the great people that run the charity, serve on the Board of Directors, and participate in our events do so on a volunteer basis. They give their time to make all of our “random acts” possible. They are a dedicated team of firefighters and non-firefighters that share and participate in our vision. As Firefighters Random Acts has grown over the past ten years so has the reach and impact that we aim to have on the community as well as the firefighters we serve. This led to the hiring of an employee to work as a Development and Outreach Coordinator to help the Board and Director manage the organization.

Patrick has served on the board of Random Acts since the establishment of the organization as one of the founders. Patrick is a retired Captain from the Albuquerque Fire Department. Since retiring, he has served as the AFD Chaplain Director as well as one of the chaplains for the AFD Retirees Association. Currently, Patrick is a licensed mental health counselor reaching back into the fire community helping firefighters combat posttraumatic stress issues. Patrick’s favorite time of year is the Random Acts Christmas Party each when firefighters bring Christmas gifts to hundreds of children each year. “As a board member, I am honored and privileged to be a part of an organization that empowers firefighters who reach back into our community touching many lives.”

Steve Vaughan, BCFD

Steve Vaughan, BCFD

Program Director / Treasurer

Steve, who has been a firefighter with the Bernalillo County Fire Dept since 2001 and now serves as a Lieutenant, has been with Random Acts since its inception as one of the organization's founders. Steve’s favorite random act was the story of Cesar. After giving him Christmas presents and making him an honorary firefighter, his oncologist shared with us that was the first time in five years she had ever seen Cesar’s smile. As a fervent believer, Steve also incorporates his faith into all he does; Directing Random Acts has changed his life.

  • Mike Mckinstry was an original founder of the organization and served for over 10 years, much of that time as the president, working to make the organization what it is today. 10 years and 12 grandchildren later he retired from the charity in September 2018 to spend more time with his family but remains dedicated to the vision and plans on continuing to volunteer.
  • Mark Chavez was an original founder of the organization who served for over 10 years, much of that time as the vice-president, working tirelessly to grow the organization and share our vision for helping combat PTSD. A dedicated Christian he retired from the charity in February 2018 to spend more time involved in various church ministries that depend on him and enjoy time with his grandson, Chop Chop! He continues to be a big part of the organization through coordinating one of our biggest annual fundraisers.
