Our Team

Random Acts is a non-profit that operates with very little overhead. All of the great people that run the charity, serve on the Board of Directors, and participate in our events do so on a volunteer basis. They give their time to make all of our “random acts” possible. They are a dedicated team of firefighters and non-firefighters that share and participate in our vision. As Firefighters Random Acts has grown over the past ten years so has the reach and impact that we aim to have on the community as well as the firefighters we serve. This led to the hiring of an employee to work as a Development and Outreach Coordinator to help the Board and Director manage the organization.

Mike, an original founder of Random Acts, retired from the Albuquerque Fire Department five years ago. Mike has been married for thirty-three years, has six children, and twelve grand children. Mike always brings his family to the random acts, and is proud to say that his son has created several of his own. His favorite random acts are those that impact children’s lives. Being a zealous Christian, Mike makes his faith a big part of all he does, including Random Acts.

Vice President

Mark, a second founder of Albuquerque Random Acts, is a retired Captain from the Albuquerque Fire Dept. As a professional chainsaw carver, Mark heads up our annual fundraiser at the Balloon Fiesta where we raffle off chainsaw carvings. Mark has been married for thirty-one years, has three children, and one grandchild. Mark’s favorite random act is helping firefighters on fire trucks deliver toys to homes all over the city during the annual Christmas delivery. In addition to his work with Random Acts, Mark serves as a Chaplain for AFD.

Program Director / Treasurer

Steve, who has been a firefighter with the Bernalillo County Fire Dept since 2001 and now serves as a Lieutenant, has been with Random Acts since its inception as one of the organization's founders. Steve’s favorite random act was the story of Cesar. After giving him Christmas presents and making him an honorary firefighter, his oncologist shared with us that was the first time in five years she had ever seen Cesar’s smile. As a fervent believer, Steve also incorporates his faith into all he does; Directing Random Acts has changed his life.

Retired Founders

  • Mike Mckinstry was an original founder of the organization and served for over 10 years, much of that time as the president, working to make the organization what it is today. 10 years and 12 grandchildren later he retired from the charity in September 2018 to spend more time with his family but remains dedicated to the vision and plans on continuing to volunteer.
  • Mark Chavez was an original founder of the organization who served for over 10 years, much of that time as the vice-president, working tirelessly to grow the organization and share our vision for helping combat PTSD. A dedicated Christian he retired from the charity in February 2018 to spend more time involved in various church ministries that depend on him and enjoy time with his grandson, Chop Chop! He continues to be a big part of the organization through coordinating one of our biggest annual fundraisers.
